Step 1: Make sure the trinomial is in standard form.
Step 2: Focus on the last number. Let's look at an example along the way. Now find all the factors of your "C" term. The factors of 6 are 1 x 6 and 2 x 3

Step 3: After you find the factors of "C" focus on the last sign.

**If the final sign is "+" these are the options or "if the sign is positive this means they have the same sign.

** If the final sign is "-" these are the options or if the sign is negative this means they have different signs.
Step 4: This is where the guess and check comes in. Since the final sign is "+" these are our options. Using the "O" and "I" of foil which one gives us the middle term of "-5"?
